Design House: California Village

In this newly transformed California Village residence, a soothing, earthy colour palette harmonies with a chic, Scandinavian-influenced aesthetic, creating a laidback atmosphere that resonates throughout the space. Benn Robinson, the visionary behind Benn Robinson Interior Studio, orchestrated a complete makeover for this address, infusing it with a distinctive charm. Crafted as a sanctuary for the ultimate entertainer, the designer meticulously defined zones throughout the abode tailored for various social events, with the top floor featuring a standout games room that defines the essence of the residence. The integration of natural materials—wood, stone, and fibre—alongside organic forms establishes a seamless connection with the outdoor environment, while a playful layering of textures infuses depth and sophisticated dynamism into every corner. Lighting, considered the definitive detail by Benn, takes centre stage, with accent lighting illuminating key features and architecturally-inspired light pendants playfully injecting personality into the space. Now, designer Benn Robinson takes us on a tour of this retreat-like residence, where every detail reflects a perfect blend of tranquillity and design finesse.

Benn: I perceive the California Village residential district as a tranquil haven for burgeoning families. In my view, this district is a remarkable addition to Dubai's architectural landscape, providing its residents with a peaceful Cali-style lifestyle. Nestled within the bustling cityscape, it successfully captures the tranquillity synonymous with the Californian way of life. 

Comprising three and five-bedroom residences, each featuring expansive living and dining spaces, this project involved staging to attract potential clients. 

As soon as I received the project details, I envisioned a seamless integration of tonal hues and natural elements that harmonise with the surroundings. I enjoyed complete creative freedom on this project, allowing me to design the home as if it were my own. This autonomy facilitated the infusion of the space with personality, ensuring it not only met the client's expectations but also resonated with my own sense of comfort and aesthetic standards. 

Initially presented with a basic mood board, my client's vision inspired a cohesive design rooted in earthy tones. I incorporated materials like oak, rattan, jute, and stone to infuse the space with a natural essence that echoed the outdoor environment. 

The project's foundation rested on Scandinavian design principles, emphasising simplicity, functionality, and a strong connection to nature. Light hues, natural materials such as wood and stone, and minimalist furniture characterised the aesthetic, all working in symphony.

Experimenting with various textures, including plush rugs, tactile fabric pillows, and sleek wooden surfaces, added depth and visual appeal to the rooms, injecting dynamism into the space. 

This three-story residence boasts a spacious open-plan living area, perfect for hosting gatherings. I envisioned an environment tailored to the ultimate entertainer, incorporating various zones suitable for a diverse range of social events. Meticulously planned seating zones, for instance, accommodated large groups comfortably, cultivating an open and inviting atmosphere. 

The first floor houses three bedrooms, while the top floor features a games room. I curated this space to be sophisticated yet playful, ensuring aesthetic appeal and functionality. Unlike typical vibrant and masculine game rooms, I aimed for a more neutral and inviting atmosphere, seamlessly integrated with the design of the rest of the house. Design-influenced gaming equipment revitalised the room, creating a versatile and enjoyable space that appeals to a range of tastes. 

Additionally, we converted one of the lower-level bedrooms into an office, incorporating statement pieces that capture immediate attention and enhance the room's overall ambience. The burl wood desk, known for its durability and longevity, adds a special touch, crafted from high-quality wood to withstand the test of time. 

 Lighting is a crucial detail for me, and I often integrate various accent lights into my designs. Lighting plays a pivotal role in my creative vision, setting the mood and adding careful consideration to the overall ambience. Subtle, low-level lighting and exquisite pendant fixtures highlight individual pieces and showcase the entire home in its best light. 

Overall, this home emanates a tranquil atmosphere that envelops inhabitants in a soothing embrace. It’s a setting that offers a sense of familiarity and a comforting ambience that contributes to a profound sense of calm.
